Jason Collins played his first game for the Nets last night, marking the first time in history that an openly gay athlete participated in a major US professional team sport. Great to see, long overdue, athletes are athletes, doesn’t matter what color, what sexual orientation or what religion they are.
As I view my children and their friends, it is apparent that all the differences between people that were so prominently noticeable back in my youth mean virtually nothing to the young people of today. They like someone or they don’t, but not because of the color of their skin, their gender or their boyfriend/girlfriend, but because of what they bring to the table, kindness, a good sense of humor, shared interests etc. As a long time athletic participant and businessman, it’s great to see sports moving along with all the young people into a world where prejudices of all types are fading, slowly but surely.
